Bio-Gas
Natural Gas (NG) is geological by-product of organic matter of animals and plants. As fossil fuel NG is a finite resource and do contribute to climate change and we have it in abundance.
As we migrate to “Electric Everything”, there is a price to be paid for “Zero Emission”, where the production of electricity is paid out of sight. Be it from a dam, nuclear, solar panels, geothermal, wind or wave, there is initial environment, people, and floral price to pay.
True renewable energy is possible, with technologies methane generated biomass warrants special attention. Since all living things must die, it is possible to truly have “Zero Emission”, from wastewater, algae, crops, manure etc.
The potential of Nigeria, biomass have not been utilised and we are now in talk with six State Government to tap into this energy resource.
Indeed, villages can easily be encouraged to develop anaerobic digestion systems by which biogas production can be achieve as pioneer by S.V. Desai in 1939. Its composition is similar to NG.
CNG from Bio-Mass = Bio-CNG
Like NG, Bio-gas or Biomass consist mainly of methane (CH4, 55-70%) and carbon dioxide (CO2, 330-40%), with traces of H2S hydrogen sulphide, water vapour, siloxanes, ammonia, oxygen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen. The calorific value of biogas is ~91500 KJ/kg. if we further analysis the amount of CO2 component, it is almost equivalent to the amount of CO2 captured when the biomass was created. Therefore, making the process truly Carbon Natural.
It is our plan to install bio-Gas water pressure swing absorber/chemical scrubbing in areas of significant land-fill sites, yielding more methane per unit volume treated. The resulting product, Bio-Methane (Bio-CNG) or Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG). Such product Bio-CNG, contain about 92-97 % methane and about 2-8 % carbon dioxide, calorific value of about 52,000 kilojoules (kJ) per kg, 167 % higher than that of biogas.
The proof of concept has demonstrated in Leicester, England. UK, where the city public transport buses are running on Bio-CNG.
